Doctors Hospital of Hyde Park was founded (as "Illinois Central Hospital") to provide medical care as a fringe benefit for workers of the Illinois Central Railroad. Construction began in 1914; the architects were Schmidt, Garden & Martin. The building is on several lists of memorable designs. But the Illinois Central, like other railroads, eventually decided that it did not have a comparative advantage in providing medical care and sold...
