On July 31, 1998, Damon Lyons filed a complaint alleging legal malpractice against five partners and a former associate of the law firm Ropes & Gray. Acting on the defendants' motion for summary judgment, a judge in the Superior Court concluded that the complaint should have been filed by October, 1991, and therefore was barred by the three-year statute of limitations applicable to legal malpractice cases, G. L. c. 260,
