Kidneys remove toxins from the blood. Kidney failure is fatal unless a way can be found to replace their function. Hemodialysis does this. Blood is removed from the body, toxins are removed from the blood, and the blood is then returned to the body. Sometimes a few days or weeks of hemodialysis is enough; in the interim the kidneys, having suffered an acute failure because of trauma or disease...
