EDMONDSON, Circuit Judge:

Phillip Alexander Atkins, who was convicted for kidnapping and first-degree murder and sentenced to death, appeals the district court's denial of Atkins' petition for the writ of habeas corpus. We affirm.

I. BACKGROUND

Atkins confessed to the 1981 kidnapping, sexual battery and murder of six-year-old Antonio Castillo. The trial judge directed a verdict of acquittal on the sexual-battery charges because, despite Atkins' confession...
