On March 17, 1981, Carey G. Barbin suffered personal injuries as the result of an accident which occurred while participating in a woodworking class in which he was enrolled at the Louisiana School for the Deaf. Carey was twelve years old at the time of the accident and has been deaf and mute since birth.
