Justice HECHT delivered the opinion of the Court.

The principal question in this case is whether legal services provided to one spouse in a divorce proceeding are necessaries for which the other spouse is statutorily liable to pay the attorney. We answer no and therefore reverse the court of appeals' judgment1 and affirm the trial court's judgment.
