A jury convicted Leo Desormeaux IV of capital murder and injury to a child. Because the State did not seek the death penalty, the capital murder conviction carried an automatic life sentence. See Tex. Penal Code Ann. § 12.31(a)(2) (West 2011); Tex.Code Crim. Proc. Ann. art. 37.071, § 1 (West Supp.2011).
