This appeal arises from a custody dispute involving J.C., now an eight-year-old girl, and S.C., her thirteen-year-old brother. Their mother, Socorro Angel, died tragically in November 2006. Her death was ruled a homicide, and her husband, Adan Covarrubias, was charged with her murder. Although the murder charge was eventually dropped, Covarrubias was held in police custody following his subsequent arrest on unrelated immigration...
