Opinion by Justice MOSELEY.

In 2002, Phillip Wayne Simpson pled guilty to aggravated sexual assault and was placed on deferred community supervision pursuant to a negotiated plea agreement. In 2007, Simpson filed an application for writ of habeas corpus1 in which he challenged the voluntariness of that guilty plea. Simpson contends that he received ineffective assistance of counsel at the time
