The court properly denied defendant's suppression motion in all respects. When police officers who were investigating a recent, nearby shooting saw defendant adjusting a large object that bulged from his waistband, suggesting the presence of a handgun rather than an innocuous object (see People v Benjamin, 51 N.Y.2d 267, 271 [1980]), they had, at least, at least a common-law right to inquire.
