Defendant killed his former girlfriend by choking her with his hands, stabbing her with scissors and strangling her by wrapping a lamp cord around her neck. He confessed to numerous individuals, including several police officers, that he killed the victim. In light of defendant's statements and the other available evidence, the only apparent defense to the murder charge was the affirmative defense of extreme emotional disturbance (hereinafter EED) (
