In May 2002, petitioner was convicted of a number of crimes and was sentenced to various terms of imprisonment, the longest of which was 4½ to 9 years for the crime of criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree. Petitioner was given a maximum expiration date of May 15, 2010 and was conditionally released to parole supervision on May 15, 2007.
