Ronald Sims was charged with the second degree murder of Brandon Franklin. See La. R.S. 14:30.1. Mr. Sims opted for a bench trial, and, on November 18, 2010, the district judge found him guilty of the responsive verdict of manslaughter. See La.C.Cr.P. art. 814 A(3); La. R.S. 14:31. The district judge then sentenced him to a term of thirty years in the Department of Corrections, without the benefit of parole or suspension of sentence...
