A jury convicted Clifford Pierce of illegal possession of an automobile valued at more than five hundred dollars. See former La. R.S. 14:69 B(1). Following habitual offender proceedings, the district judge sentenced him to the remainder of his natural life in prison, without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence. See La. R.S. 15:529.1 A(1)(c)(i) and G.
