In this case, the sins of a contractor were imputed to the homeowners of a lake cottage after the contractor failed to obtain the necessary permits for new a deck and stairs. To remedy the situation, the contractor sought a post-construction variance for the newly-constructed deck and stairs because neither complied with a zoning ordinance requiring a twenty-foot lakefront setback.
