Following a bench trial in the circuit court of Cook County, defendant, Encarnacion Torres, was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment. On appeal, defendant contended that the trial court violated his constitutional right to confront the witnesses against him when it permitted the State to introduce into evidence the preliminary hearing testimony...
