Justice APPLETON delivered the opinion of the court:

Defendant, Randy Cook, pleaded guilty to theft over $300 (720 ILCS 5/16-1(a)(2)(A) (West 2006)) and unlawful possession of less than 15 grams of cocaine (720 ILCS 570/402(c) (West 2006)) in separately charged cases. In exchange for defendant's guilty pleas, the State agreed to dismiss a third pending charge. The trial court sentenced defendant to two consecutive prison terms of 42 months and 3 years, respectively...
