The plaintiff applied for social security disability benefits in 2010, when he was 40 years old. He claimed to be disabled from full-time employment because of abdominal pain caused by cirrhosis of the liver, severe thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), hepatitis C, and an umbilical hernia — ailments that had been diagnosed by several physicians that year.
