Karen Cook ("Cook") was appointed receiver over the assets of a number of related corporations and individuals, who the Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") alleged violated multiple federal securities laws. Cook discovered that before the SEC filed its civil complaint, the corporate entities involved had made charitable contributions to the American Cancer Society ("ACS") totalling $240,000.
