A jury concluded that Keith Bland set out to steal some guns from his father's house and did not care who got hurt. He and his confederates found his stepmother at home. She was executed by a bullet to the back of her head. A state court sentenced Bland to 71 years' imprisonment for murder and armed robbery. His conviction was affirmed on appeal, and the state judiciary rejected a collateral attack...
