The Book of Isaiah speaks of a time when beauty will replace ashes. Isaiah 61:3. Apparently getting the prophecy backwards, defendant Paul Mare tried to burn down his beauty salon. A federal jury convicted Mare of attempted arson, but he now claims that the district court erred in making two evidentiary rulings that prejudiced his defense at trial.
