Gerald Elam was convicted in Missouri state court and sentenced to life in prison for the first degree murder of his grandfather, armed criminal action, and second-degree arson. The Missouri Court of Appeals affirmed, rejecting Elam's contention that the trial court erred in finding him competent to stand trial. State v. Elam, 89 S.W.3d 517, 522 (Mo.Ct.App.2002).
