Petitioner Mahir Daoud, convicted of the first-degree murder of his mother, filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus, pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 2254. The district court denied his petition and granted a certificate of appealability ("COA") as to one issue: whether Daoud knowingly and intelligently waived his Miranda rights.
