The owner of the patent, i4i Limited Partnership ("i4i"), brought suit against Microsoft Corporation ("Microsoft"), alleging that the custom XML editor in certain versions of Microsoft Word ("Word"), Microsoft's word-processing software, infringed i4i's patent.
