The defendant, Michael D. Pires, Sr., appeals from the judgment of conviction, rendered after a jury trial, of murder in violation of General Statutes § 53a-54a. The defendant claims that the trial court improperly (1) denied him the constitutional right to self-representation and (2) instructed the jury in several ways, including on the requisite intent for the charged crime and on his right not to testify.
