In 1983, Thanksnieky Phuong (appellant) entered the victim's home on the pretext of seeking childcare services. Once inside, he viciously attacked and beat her, demanded money, and continued the attack. He dragged her away from the front door, upstairs into the master bedroom, then to the bathroom, where he gratuitously slashed her abdomen and, thinking her unconscious, fled from the home.
