On December 29, 2011, C.D.S. filed a petition in the Mobile Probate Court ("the probate court") seeking to adopt K.R.S. ("the child") under § 26-10A-27, Ala.Code 1975, a part of the Alabama Adoption Code, § 26-10A-1 et seq., Ala.Code 1975. The probate court requested that C.D.S. file a brief setting forth the applicable law, and it later conducted a hearing. On April 6, 2012, the probate court entered a judgment denying C.D.S....
