Pursuant to a guilty plea, defendant Krishnakumar Rajagopal was convicted in 1996 of felony theft. In 2004, he filed a petition for postconviction relief, in which he alleged, inter alia, that his guilty plea was involuntary and that his trial counsel was ineffective for failing to advise him that he would be deported as a result of his felony conviction.
