Justice KARMEIER delivered the judgment of the court, with opinion:

The defendant, William Hudson, was charged in the circuit court of Adams County with home invasion (720 ILCS 5/12-11(a)(2) (West 2004)) (count I) and attempt (kidnapping) (720 ILCS 5/8-4(a), 10-1(a)(2) (West 2004)) (count II). A jury found defendant guilty of home invasion, but was unable to reach a verdict on attempt (kidnapping). Defendant was subsequently sentenced to 20 years...
