Following a jury trial in the circuit court of Cook County, defendant, Efren Melchor, was convicted of first degree murder. See Ill.Rev.Stat.1989, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a). At the close of a sentencing hearing, the trial court sentenced defendant to a prison term of 40 years.
