The defendant, Fanta Kaba, is a native of the West-African nation of Guinea who entered the United States illegally in 2001. Although illiterate, she was able to establish a successful restaurant business in New York City. On October 24, 2005, however, she pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin in violation of 21 U.S.C. § 846.
