OPINION OF THE COURT

CATTERSON, J.

On August 31, 1996, police officers responding to a call at the home of the defendant and his wife Carla Lockwood found the emaciated remains of Nadine Lockwood, their daughter, in a filthy crib. She weighed 15 pounds, and looked like little more than a skeleton. The officers were shocked to discover that Nadine would have been five years old had she lived another 19 days.
