TYMKOVICH, Circuit Judge.

A federal jury convicted Christopher Holyfield of conspiracy to distribute over fifty grams of crack cocaine and over five kilograms of powder cocaine, a crime with a sentencing range spanning ten years to life in prison. 21 U.S.C. § 841(b)(1)(A). The district court sentenced him to life in prison based on a minimum sentence statutorily mandated due to two prior convictions in California state court.
