Plaintiff/counter-defendant appeals as of right from the trial court's order granting defendant/counter-plaintiff a default judgment of divorce.1 We affirm in part and reverse in part.

Plaintiff and defendant were married in 1968 and resided in North Carolina for approximately 10 years before moving to Michigan. In 1978, defendant moved to Michigan with her six children, and plaintiff followed a short time later....
