Prisoner Kenneth Young brought an action against the Minnesota Department of Corrections (MDOC) and its officials under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, claiming that they violated the eighth amendment's prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment by failing to protect him from an assault by his roommate.
