Gilberta Dorsey worked as a branch manager for Morgan Stanley until April 19, 2001, when she was asked to step down from her position following an investigation into personnel and compliance issues at her office. Dorsey filed suit against Morgan Stanley under Title VII, bringing claims of gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and unlawful retaliation.
