Appellant Kimberly Sue Austin was convicted of felony injury to a child for injecting her young son with insulin and then sentenced to ninety-nine years' incarceration. The State's theory was that Austin suffered from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy ("MSBP"), a mental condition describing a caregiver, often a mother of young children, who falsifies and/or induces illness in those cared for to gain attention and sympathy.
