While investigating suspected drug activity at a motel in Mattoon, Illinois, police detained convicted-felon Shawn Adamson and discovered a .22 caliber handgun in his possession. Mr. Adamson was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. See 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1). He moved to suppress the handgun as the product of an unreasonable search and detention.
