In 1977 Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was deposed as Prime Minister of Pakistan. General Zia ul-Haq took over in a coup. Hifzur Rehman was among Zia's subordinate officers. Rehman and his family had been, and remained, friends of the Bhutto family.
