In January 1989, respondent was granted custody of her granddaughter, Amanda (born in 1988), who suffered from numerous physical ailments from the time of her birth. In 1991, the child was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus which continued to reactivate either into further episodes of that virus or mononucleosis.
