Ethel Lowenbraun was married to Stanley Lowenbraun, once a successful oncologist who fell into financial ruin due to a gambling addiction. Ethel and Stanley legally separated in 1998, and Stanley filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition shortly thereafter.
