A jury returned a special verdict against the defendant, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), for reckless conduct stemming from an accident in which one of the defendant's trains severed the lower left leg of the plaintiff, Pablo Candia Montes. The jury could have found that, at the time of the accident, the train was traveling at an excessive rate of speed and that the defendant's motorperson was not paying attention while operating the train...
