The main issue in this appeal involves the timeliness of a federal habeas petition, which depends upon when a Georgia conviction became final on direct appeal. A petition for a writ of habeas corpus must be filed within a year after the petitioner's conviction becomes final "by the conclusion of direct review or the expiration of the time for seeking such review." 28 U.S.C. § 2244(d)(1)(A).
