On 23 February 1988, Nathaniel Mark Upshur ("defendant") was sentenced to life imprisonment upon his conviction by a jury of first-degree rape and a consecutive term of ten years upon his conviction by the jury of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He entered a plea of no contest to first-degree murder and was sentenced to a concurrent term of life imprisonment for that offense...
