NATURE OF CASE

Michael J. Gunther was charged with first degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony in the shooting death of Michael R. Zawodny. At trial, Gunther waived his constitutional right to counsel and represented himself. He was convicted by a jury on both counts. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole on the murder conviction and to a period of 10 to 20 years'
