Petitioner was convicted in 1976 of murder in the second degree in connection with the strangulation of his ex-girlfriend and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. In 1977, he was convicted of burglary in the third degree and was sentenced to a concurrent prison term of 3½ to 7 years.
