Willie Earl Hopkins was indicted for aggravated rape, armed robbery, simple arson resulting in damage of over $500, simple burglary, and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A 12-member jury found him guilty as charged on all counts. The district court imposed the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment at hard labor without benefits for the aggravated rape, and consecutive and concurrent sentences for the remaining offenses.
