Christopher Holly was a pretrial detainee at Cook County Jail who was placed in segregation (that is, in solitary confinement) for two days without a prior hearing. He brought suit for damages under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 against the correctional officers responsible for placing him in segregation, contending that the denial of a predeprivation hearing meant that he had been deprived of liberty without due process of law.
