Sharon Hesse brought this Title VII case against her former employer Avis Rent A Car System, Inc., alleging sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and retaliation. Avis moved for summary judgment, arguing that it had responded to Hesse's complaints and that her layoff was part of a reduction in force necessitated by the loss of business after the terrorist attacks in September 2001.
