WILKINSON, Circuit Judge.

Appellants Kulthoum A. Mereish, Ayaad Assaad, and Richard D. Crosland were scientists employed with the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases ("USAMRIID"). On May 9, 1997, they were laid off as part of a reduction in force ("RIF"). In separate suits, they alleged, inter alia, that they were terminated on the basis of their age in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967...
